Junior Section

At Hickling Broad Sailing Club CIO we realise how crucial our Juniors are to the future of the club and to the sport of sailing.

Sailing is one of the few sports where all ages and genders can compete on an even keel. Where youthful exuberance can occasionally best ageing experience and conditions can sometimes favour the lighter sailor. It really is a sport for everyone.

To help promote this we have a variety of junior activities during the year from 9 Saturday training days during the season to our popular Tuesday evening 'Tsail' during the Late Spring & Summer.

HBSC encourages sailing for all levels and abilities from those who have never set foot in a boat to encouraging the more experienced Junior wanting to try and push their abilities to new levels.

Juniors that are keen to race are always welcome on the start line and we are more than happy to add in an additional start for juniors when numbers dictate. Sunday afternoons are a brilliant time to try racing against other club racers when numbers on the water are usually lower than the mornings. This is a great way to boost confidence on the water and increase an awareness of the rules. Those interested could also be asked if they would like to represent the club at local youth events such as the Broadland Youth Regatta.

For those less keen on racing and without their own dinghy, club boats are always available so they can just get on the water, potter around and appreciate the beautiful environment of Hickling Broad.

Those Juniors that consistently demonstrate a high degree of responsibility may also be offered a chance to gain an RYA Power Boat qualification. Consisting of time in the classroom and practical time on the water with one of our Safety Boat Instructors and concluding with an assessment whereupon a relevant RYA certificate will be issued if the appropriate level has been achieved.

And finally your safety is taken very seriously at our club and all organised racing and training activities are accompanied by at least one safety boat. All members are encouraged to wear buoyancy aids and it is mandatory for the under 12's to wear one whilst on the club site.

See our Events section for details of training days and 'Tsail' dates.

Junior membership details can be found on the Membership Details page within the "In the Clubhouse" section on this website.
