Matt Boreham's Alantic Rowing Challenge

In early January 2008, Matt Boreham and Alan Lock will leave the cold and cloudy climes of England for Tenerife.  Sadly for them, this is no winter break to the sun, but the starting point of an arduous and gruelling challenge.  They will be rowing the 3000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean from Tenerife to Antigua.
This may sound a rather extreme start to the year, but it is all in a good cause - the challenge will be
raising money for sense, which supports deaf and blind people.
They will be attempting this voyage in their craft GEMINI – which will be their home for duration of
the challenge.  Matt and Alan will be at sea for 2 – 3 months and whilst they are confident of witty
and stimulating conversations, both are storing up their ipods for the long haul…

Topper National Series - Datchet Water SC

195 keen Topper sailors descended on Datchet Reservoir for the first Craftinsure Topper National Series event, breaking the record yet again for this prestigious series. The fleet was split into 4 flights with a programme for each flight to sail against each other twice over the weekend.

Three members of HBSC took part in this record breaking event - Jordan Rumsby, Bryony Bennet-Lloyd and Georgia Povall

On Saturday, a stiff 15-20kt wind to challenge all competitors. The first race started with a 'I' flag, but it didn't take long until the black flag was flying. Jordan made his mark in the second race, when his port end flyer made him 1st round the windward mark. He settled for second, but a key achievement. Georgia and Bryony both got consistant results in the top third of the fleet.

A contrast on Sunday, with 6kts of wind. Thunder storms came through which shifted the wind. The PRO struggled to set a line, a long wait for the competitors. This did not affect Bryony, with a very competitive 15th as a result.

Topper Inlands - Grafham Water SC

The Magic Marine Topper Inland Championships is one of the largest inland events with 255 Toppers and yet provides a friendly and inclusive introduction to big fleet sailing. With approximately 25% of the fleet at their first Inlands the conditions were ideal with a SE breeze on both days ranging between 10 and 15knts.

Four competitors repercented Hickling Broad SC - Jordan Rumsby, Bryony Bennett-Lloyd, Georgia Povall and her sister Rosie Povall.

My first inlands event by Rosie Povall-

My name is Rosie Povall, I’m 13 years old and have been a member of Hickling Broad Sailing club for about 3 years.

On the weekend of 3rd/4th May, the Topper Inland Championships were held at Grafham Water Sailing Club.  Also at the same time they were holding a Regatta fleet for those who are less experienced or less serious.  I decided I didn’t want to be sitting around watching my sister Georgina sail in the main fleet so I put myself in for the Regatta fleet.  I was a bit nervous about it to begin with since it was my first event anywhere else other than Hickling.  But I needn’t have worried because there was a coach on the water and the rules of racing were simplified.  On the first day I achieved some good places and was excited and ready for the next day of racing.  When we arrived at Grafham for the second day I was a bit disappointed  since there was not much wind but I still managed to come 4th overall (out of 14 in the fleet) . At the end of the day there was a prize giving presentation where I was given a Magic Marine sun visor and Grafham Sailing Club badge.

I really enjoyed my weekend and am hoping to do the Regatta fleet at the Topper Nationals at Paignton, in the summer.

Wayfarer eastern area championships - Blackwater SC

Twenty crews competed in the first UK Wayfarers National Circuit Series event of 2008 at Blackwater Sailing Club on the 17th and 18th May. This event doubled up as the Eastern Area Championships.

The competitors enjoyed two days of fiercely competitive racing at Blackwater in a force 3-4 easterly to north easterly breeze, on excellent Olympic courses laid by the Race Officer, Commodore Barry Foulds and his team. Conditions were grey and overcast on Saturday and sunny and bright on Sunday, but there were some big shifts and much place changing on the beats on both days.

Simon and Rachel Clayton repersented HBSC at this event. With a b set of consistant results, they established themselves in 4th position.

3 Rivers Race 2008

The Three Rivers Race 2008 was held over the weekend of Saturday 31st May/Sunday 1st June. Out of the 128 entrants in the 48th Navigators and General Three Rivers Race held at Horning Sailing Club, 121 started and there were 100 finishers. The 24 hour race was set over a course of 50+ miles and started this year at 11am, an hour earlier than usual, which resulted in better sailing for most. There were almost idyllic sailing conditions, with a light breeze keeping up for much of the night enabling most of the fleet to return before daybreak.

Hickling Broad Sailing Club was repercented by many sailors. Notable results inclued:
3rd - Jane Pye
7th - Mark Elson
11th - Geoff Tibbenham
14th - Paul Wren
18th - John Parker
21st - Brian Wilkins
29th - Terrence Vincent

With these great results, HBSC won best club. Jane Pye won the first centre board and the first non Horning sailing club member awards. Geoff Tibbenham ended up first under 25 helm, winning the Bewilderwood trophy

A long drive to Largs Nationwide,  to some surprisingly sunny & dry weather but a chilly breeze.  George Povall came 24th out of the 144 entries - beating lots of national squad!!

Kestrel Open at Goldhanger Sailing Club

The 21st of June saw eighteen Kestrels assembled at Goldhanger Sailing Club for their first visit of the year to the River Blackwater, including entries from as far afield as the Solent and the Tay. Always likely to attract the largest open meeting turnout, this was also the last opportunity to check out the competition before the National Championships in a month’s time.

Saturday brought grey skies and docile conditions, with force two over flat water once the estuary had flooded. Some were caught out by the first close reaching start. Dusty Miller / John Ellingham and Liam Pike / Ali luxford carried spinnakers inshore in the hope of an advantage against the last of the incoming tide. Paul / James Jarvey found the going better in deeper water with more breeze, closely pursued by Dave Hearsum / Gareth Fay. With the advantage of clear air these two stretched away, leaving Dusty Miller unable to close up. The flat water conditions meant that for the first time no places were won or lost due to navigational error. Ian Rintoul / Richard Anthony led the next bunch, to finish fourth ahead of the chasing pack.

The start of the second race saw several boats embarrassed by the ebbing tide and drawn over the line while others were luffed out of contention, leaving several boats having to backtrack or make amends before proceeding. Paul Jarvey emerged ahead, this time accompanied by Dusty Miller. Dusty took the lead downwind and held it to the finish. These two took full advantage of the slightly increased breeze to build a lead that left them untouchable in first and second places overall. After touching the distance mark in the initial melee, Dave Hearsum was left with significant ground to recover. Fortunately with good speed upwind he was eventually able to gain on and overtake Rod and Jenny Brown-Lee. Ian Rintoul held Hearsum off to the finish, placing these two in fourth and third respectively. The Brown-Lees sailing consistently placed sixth overall, and first home boat, just behind Liam Pike and Alistair Luxford sailing the highest placed mark one boat. The Bremners visiting from Royal Tay YC placed thirteenth overall, never quite recovering from the only capsize of the event.

Topper National Championships - Paignton SC

Sunday morning started dull and overcast with a South Westerly breeze blowing out across Tor Bay. Despite the grey sky 309 Toppers (276 in the Main fleet and 33 in the Regatta fleet) brightened up the green on the sea front at Paignton. The 2008 Magic Marine Topper Nationals has achieved yet another record entry as the Topper class continues to grow in strength. The Nationals have also attracted welcome visitors from Ireland.

Jordan Rumsby, Bryony Bennett-Lloyd, George Povall and her sister Rosie travelled all the way to sunny Devon representing Hickling Broad SC.
