Autumn Open Regatta
Phantom Travellers and Enterprise Area Championships

Hickling Broad Sailing Club held its annual Autumn Regatta on 11/12 October 2008 and also hosted the final Open Meeting of the Phantom Eastern Circuit with 20 boats as well as the Enterprise Broads Area Championships with 11 boats making a grand total of 64 dinghies racing over the weekend.

Brian Wilkins ably assisted by his race team ran the racing in great style coping with several major problems such as timing the racing to feed the hoards, serious fog on Sunday morning and coping with calculating and keeping track of all the boats. On Saturday, there was fantastic October sunshine and fresh breezes allowing excellent sailing conditions. On Sunday a flat calm and thick fog confronted the competitors and race team. A postponement of a half hour allowed a bit of breeze to fill in but the fog remained. The fleets disappeared up the broad hoping to arrive at the appropriate marks. Navigation was an issue but the locals mostly found their way by using the posts and marks on the broad. A lead rescue boat helped too. The race had to be finished from a rescue boat as the finishing line was not visible from the clubhouse!

The fog cleared for the second race on Sunday and conditions were then excellent. The final race saw two general recalls, one for the Phantoms and one for the Allcomers as the line was pushed too hard. There were a number of winners in each fleet, so the results were not decided until the last race in all except the Enterprises. Finally the fleets were won by James Jarvey (Phantoms), Jane Pye and Ian Bray in a Wayfarer in the Allcomers, Brian and Linda Cumming in the Enterprises and Matt Bate in his Splash in the Youths.

PHANTOMS

20 Phantoms took part in the finale of the class’s Eastern Travellers Series at Hickling Broad Sailing Club on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th October. Entries from as far afield as Kent and South Shields made the trip and were rewarded with fantastic, though tricky, conditions on both days. 6 incredibly close races saw 4 different race winners including Norfolk sailors James Jarvey, Simon Feilden and Alastair Warren. Jarvey won the meeting, with John Wayling from Northampton SC 2nd, and Feilden 3rd.

The Phantom circuit in East Anglia, and Norfolk in particular, has developed onto one of the best attended and closest fought race series on offer, and more and more sailors are having a go in this most exciting of singlehanded dinghies. Meetings at Wells, Denver, Southwold, Rollesby, Hickling, Felixstowe and Buckenham as well as many more in Essex and the East Midlands, provide a huge range of conditions and scenarios, and the quality of racing is superb, with fierce yet friendly competition all the way through the fleet.
